Entering Oświęcim from the south, along the Soła River, you reach a brick Gothic Parish Church of Our Lady of Succor to the Faithful and the Salesian monastery.
The church and the monastery were founded for the Dominican Order in the 14th century by the Prince of Cieszyn Mieszko I or by Władysław the Duke of Oświęcim. The Dominicans were removed in 1782 by Austrian authorities following the Partition of Poland. In the 19th century, the complex was almost completely ruined, yet in 1898 it was taken over and rebuilt by the Salesians. They put up a copy of the Turin (Italy) painting of Our Lady of Succor to the Faithful in the church. Besides the church and the painting, you can see a priceless Gothic chapel of St Jacek Odrowąż, which dates back to the 14th century. Originally, it served the Dominicans as their Chapter House or place where the elders of the monastery sat in council. The festivals appointed for the shrine include the Feast of St John Bosco – the founder of the Salesian Society (31st of January), the Feast of St Joseph the Spouse of the Virgin Mary (19th of March), and the Feast of Our Lady of Succor to the Faithful (24th of May).
